Artifact Detectives
Taught by Louise McCune
A 3 week workshop
Open to 10 students, ages 9-12
January 25-February 8
Sundays, 12-2 PM

A golden sneaker with a worn-out sole. An elaborate mural of a whale. A plastic toothbrush littered with the microscopic remains of an ancient hamburger. Imagine you are an archaeologist who just encountered these objects on a dig. What might you guess about the civilization that left these behind? What questions would you ask to guide your future research?

In this workshop, you will learn how archaeologists make inferences based on artifacts. You will practice this skill yourself by interpreting the few remaining objects from an invented "lost civilization" and report your findings in a creative writing piece. How much do you think gets lost in translation when you only have a scarce material record to learn about a group of people? Let's find out!
