Pop-up Pirate Store for California Bookstore Day
On California Bookstore Day (a celebration of the rich culture of independent bookstores in this great state), 826 Valencia will be continuing its tradition of partnering with the renowned Green Apple Books and their new location in the Sunset. Events will take place at two locations:
10:30–11:30: Storytelling Extravaganza at Green Apple Books, 506 Clement St. (Ideal for ages 6-10)
To kick off the festivities of the day, 826 volunteer and illustrator extraordinaire Ashley Despain and Program Coordinator Claudia Sanchez will be leading a version of our Storytelling and Bookmaking Field Trip, in which participants will write a story as a group as it’s illustrated right before their eyes. Each young author will leave with their own bound book. Space is limited, so arrive early!
11am–8pm: Pirate Store Pop-Up at Green Apple Books on the Park 9th Ave between Lincoln and Irving
After you’ve made your own book, you can chart a course across Golden Gate Park—or hop on the 44 bus if you forgot your sextant—to Books on the Park, where we’ll have an all day Pirate Store Pop-Up and drop-in writing activities for all ages. The day will culminate in a Poets vs. Pirates event from 7–8pm featuring We are Pirates author Daniel Handler, poet and 826 Quarterly Vol.19 foreword writer Matthew Zapruder, and poet Victoria Chang.
A perfect day of literary festivities, writing, and maybe a barter-for-treasure or two. Anything could happen. See you there!
