Development Director

POSITION:  Development Director
REPORTS TO:  Executive Director
SUPERVISES:  Grants Director and Development Assistant
STATUS:  Exempt
HOURS:  9:00 – 5:30 with evenings and weekends as required
SALARY:  Commensurate with experience




The Development Director is committed to the growth and advancement of 826 Valencia through fundraising of major and annual gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Development Director oversees all aspects of fundraising and public relations for the development, successful implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive strategic fundraising plan to meet short and long-term revenue goals.



The Development Director reports to the Executive Director of 826 Valencia. The Development Director manages a VISTA AmeriCorps member and a Grants Director.



  • Develop and execute an annual and a long-term fundraising plan to maximize contributed revenue
  • Serve as principal fundraising strategist on the full development program, including individual and corporate giving, foundation, and government grants
  • Oversee the preparation of high-quality grant proposals and reports
  • Manage the donor database and ensure the accuracy of donor records
  • Evaluate and analyze the existing development program and implement effective changes to increase overall development performance
  • Support the development and implementation of the Shipmates Society – a donor giving society
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with donors and key-decision makers
  • Oversee the creation and execution of both high-level and low-level fundraising events, including the annual gala
  • Provide assistance and leadership to the Executive Director to build and maintain long term relationships with donors and to cultivate effective, meaningful relationships with prospects that result in measurable results
  • Guide the board, staff, and volunteers in development best practices
  • Support board participation and engagement



  • Attend staff meetings, meet all deadlines and assist with the overall well-being of the organization
  • Attend National Conference and other professional develop workshops/conferences/seminars, etc.
  • Update relevant sections of the 826 Valencia website and publication materials
  • Participate as part of the organization’s leadership team in the development and management of the strategic direction for 826 Valencia, and integrate the team’s work to support the organizational vision and mission
  • All other duties as assigned by the Executive Director



  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least ten years of progressive responsibility in fundraising, especially in major gifts
  • Demonstrated ability to solicit and close major gifts, especially those in the five- to six-figure range
  • Experience creating development strategies and research profiles
  • Proven experience and proficiency at developing and maintaining a large number and wide range of relationships, both externally and internally within an organization



  • Excellent command of English language and grammar, both verbal and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – a cheerful attitude and a sense of humor is a must
  • Proficient with computer applications – a thorough understanding of the Microsoft Office suite and the ability to learn and master other computer technology/software programs as needed; Experience with Salesforce is imperative
  • Experience managing staff
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population and a variety of stakeholders and audiences
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness
  • Ability to assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the organization
  • Advanced organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks



This full-time position is located at the 826 Valencia office at 826 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA. The Development Director must be able to travel in the San Francisco Bay Area to meetings at funders’ offices, to the 826 National office at 44 Gough Street, and to other locations, such as schools, where some 826 Valencia programs operate. Must be available to travel throughout the U.S. as necessary with some overnight stays required. Occasional long hours required to meet deadlines or to assist with organization activities.
