We are very excited to announce that Tania Llambelis, an English Language Development (ELD) teacher at ASCEND (A School Cultivating Excellence, Nurturing Diversity) School in Oakland, is our January Teacher of the Month! Ms. Llambelis’s enthusiasm for teaching and her dedication to her students wowed all of us at 826 Valencia.

From her nomination packet, put together by students and parents, we learned that Ms. Llambelis loves teaching, which inspires her students and makes them excited to learn. Kimberly Cazares, one of her students, says that Ms. Llambelis “makes everything fun but challenging at the same time.” She incorporates dance into her ELD classes, something that many students say is “freeing” and “fun.” And one parent, Maricela Macias, notes that she has seen a noticeable change in her daughter after she spent two years with Ms. Llambelis. Read more about Ms. Llambelis (link to 826valencia.org).

The students at ASCEND School are lucky to have a teacher as inspiring and creative as Ms. Llambelis. Congratulations again, and keep up the good work!

Every month, we choose a new teacher to honor with the Teacher of the Month award and a cash prize of $1,500. Know a teacher you want to nominate? Check out our guidelines (http://826valencia.org/our-programs/teacher-of-the-month/).

We are very excited to announce that Tania Llambelis, an English Language Development (ELD) teacher at ASCEND (A School Cultivating Excellence, Nurturing Diversity) School in Oakland, is our January teacher of the month! Ms. Llambelis’s enthusiasm for teaching and her dedication to her students amaze all of us at 826 Valencia.

Ms. Llambelis’s enthusiasm and friendliness is notable among both students and parents. She loves teaching, which inspires her students and sparks excitement for learning. Kimberly Cazares, one of Ms. Llambelis’s students, says that Ms. Llambelis “makes everything fun but challenging at the same time.”

The motivation and comfort that Ms. Llambelis provides for her students makes them look forward to going to class everyday. Ms. Llambelis encourages her students to accomplish their goals and try to make their dreams a reality. One of her students, Omar, says that Ms. Llambelis “helps us feel good about ourselves.” Ms. Llambelis’ unorthodox approach to teaching is one of many things that make her a unique and inspirational educator. She incorporates dance into her ELD classes, something that many students say is “freeing” and “fun.”

Ms. Llambelis’s creativity in her teaching has also been highly praised by parents. One parent, Maricela Macias, notes that she has seen a noticeable change in her daughter after she spent 2 years with Ms. Llambelis. She inspires her students with creative methods of teaching and continuous encouragement. Ms. Llambelis’s ability to make her students excited to learn is a testament to her unique and effective teaching style. Her continued passion for teaching makes her an exemplar colleague and extraordinary mentor to her students.

The students and staff at ASCEND School are lucky to have an educator as inspiring and creative as Ms. Llambelis. Congratulations again, and keep up the good work!

From teacher Eric Chow:

As San Francisco residents, we are so fortunate to have access to fresh produce, a truly metropolitan food culture, and a public that views food as a social justice issue. Just about every segment of our city puts a high priority on what they put on their plate… with some glaring exceptions. Our public school children have been subjected to pre-prepackaged, color-less breakfasts and lunches that not only lack flavor but even fall short in meeting basic nutritional needs. This is unacceptable in any city, but it should cause greater outrage in our city with its diversity of people and cultures, its abundance of ethnic and specialty markets and eateries.

This was the starting point for our project, Food as Memory, in which my English Language Development class at Burton High School will explore the inextricable ties between food, identity and culture, and in extension, the sustainability of people and the resources we use. With the help of 826 Valencia, we are planning to publish a unique collection of each student’s memoirs about foods from their childhood along with recipes and artwork.

My ELD students are mostly newcomers with varying English and academic abilities. They are from China, Vietnam, The Philippines, El Salvador and Mexico. Nearly all of them qualify for free and reduced lunch, and yet many of them do not eat the lunches from our school cafeteria. They like to talk among each other and there are always the few who always participate in class discussion. Besides going over their writing, the tutors would be a great help in engaging them in social and academic conversation in English.

The curriculum for this project is based on collaboration with World Savvy’s Media and Arts Program (MAP). World Savvy, a global education non-profit organization, sponsors the Media and Arts Program in San Francisco and New York City and culminates with a celebration and gallery opening of the student participants’ work.
