Founded in 2002 by writer Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari, 826 Valencia is an award-winning non-profit that provides free writing, tutoring, and publishing services for under-resourced students at two centers and three school-based satellite sites in San Francisco. We are known for our whimsical brand, highlighted by our student publications and creative spaces, and embodied in our work with the community. We are in a period of rapid and exciting expansion, having recently built a new center in the Tenderloin neighborhood and with a planned expansion to the Mission Bay, and are building up our advancement team to increase awareness and support of our mission.

POSITION SUMMARY

826 Valencia is seeking a full-time Individual Philanthropy Officer responsible for developing, cultivating and soliciting individual donors with the capacity to give five- and six-figure gifts. This individual will hold and develop relationships in the community (primarily locally but also some national) that will yield immediate results and lead to the long-term development and growth of the organization’s overall fundraising programs. The Individual Philanthropy Officer will to report to the Development Director and will join the Grants and Evaluation Director, the Development Coordinator, the Communications Manager and the Americorps VISTA Development Associate and Communications Associate as an integral member of the advancement team.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Individual Philanthropy Officer reports to the Director of Development.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Successfully identify, cultivate, solicit and steward individual donors with capacity to make five- and six-figure gifts.
  • With the Development Director, Executive Director and Board, grow the individual donor program, estimated to bring in $1.5M this year, and deepen existing relationships that will support the organization in the longer term.
  • Develop, manage, cultivate, solicit and steward a personal portfolio of 75-100 individual prospects and current donors, meeting with all donors regularly to ensure they are engaged with the activities of the organization.
  • Mine internal historical and external research sources, as well as recommendations from staff and Board, to build the organization’s prospect pool.
  • Manage the organization’s large-scale stewardship program, ensuring that we are appropriately thanking donors and giving them opportunities to engage and deepen their relationship with the organization.
  • Support the Development Director, Executive Director, Board and volunteer solicitors in their fundraising efforts, including providing them with prospect research, solicitation plans and coaching as needed.
  • Manage and maintain individual contact data, using prospect tracking systems, moves management and other tools.
  • Write effective proposals, reports, stewardship pieces, invitations, thank-you letters and other donor communications.
  • With the Development team, manage the creation and execution of both high-level and low-level fundraising events, including and especially the annual Bookeaters’ Bash.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend staff meetings, meet all deadlines and assist with the overall well-being of the organization.
  • Attend National Conference and other professional development workshops/conferences/seminars, etc.
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university
  • Five to seven years successful experience in individual major gift fundraising, preferably in the field of education or arts.
  • Proficiency in donor management software for prospect tracking essential, Salesforce preferred.
  • Familiarity with donor screening resources such as WealthEngine preferred.
  • Outstanding organizational, time management and analytical skills and the ability to independently manage multiple fundraising activities and programs.
  • Must have reliable automobile transportation and a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point)

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

This full-time position is located at the 826 Valencia Tenderloin Office office at 180 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA. The Individual Philanthropy Officer must be able to travel to funder locations in the greater San Francisco Bay Area as well as the 826 Valencia Mission Center and to other locations, such as schools, where some 826 Valencia programs operate. Must be available to travel throughout the U.S. as necessary with some overnight stays required. Occasional long hours required to meet deadlines or to assist with organization activities.
