“Umm . . . excuse me, Mr. Tom,” Bryan says. “Why is Xaria on that poster?” He says it with a sort of disdain that makes me a little bit offended.
“Oh. That’s the African American honor roll. That’s why you’re not on it, if you were wondering,” Mr. Tom explains calmly, then walks up the stairs.
“Wait, you’re African American?!” Bryan exclaims incredulously at me.
Looking back on it, the expression of complete surprise on his face makes me crack up. Eyes wide, astonished, mouth in a perfect O. A face that someone has when they win the lottery, or answer a question right on a game show. But, in third grade, I just said, “Yeah,” and kept walking.
