The 826 Valencia family recently lost one of its original volunteers, the beloved Charlotte Petersen. Charlotte established the standard by which 826 volunteers are measured. She did a lot of everything at 826 Valencia, from in-school programs to volunteer orientations to after-school tutoring every Wednesday. Charlotte helped create the Straight-up News at Everett Middle School, sanded down the original Pirate Store tables, and painted the Everett Writers’ Room, which she also helped design. Last summer, for the 826 Valencia Local Heroes workshop, middle school student Daphna Bendull wrote about how Charlotte saved the life of San Francisco Police Officer Nick Ferrando in 2002. Memories of Charlotte’s warmth, grace, and inexhaustible ability to connect to teachers and students alike will live on at 826 Valencia.
We’d like to invite those touched by Charlotte’s warmth to a memorial service Saturday, November 19th at the Make-Out Room, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. The bar will be open and there will be light snacks from Bi-Rite Market. We know that Charlotte touched countless lives, and so we’ll spend some of the evening inviting guests to speak and remember her. We welcome those that knew her to come and remember her with us. We hope it will be the kind of party she would have wanted to attend.
