There is nothing worse than jumping onto a ship, ready to get some real tough plundering going on, and having a guy start twirling his sword above his head and flipping it around like a fool. It’s embarrassing. Look at it this way: If you’re any good at doing frilly sword tricks, the best you can hope for is losing your dignity. If you’re not any good, the best you can hope for is losing a non-dominant ear.
