Volunteer Stories

Volunteer of the Month The staff at 826 Valencia is small compared to the output of the organization. There’s absolutely no way we could create hundreds of publications and serve thousands of students annually without a legion of dedicated volunteers. This group of superstars works in all realms, from tutoring to design to fundraising and beyond. They range in age, background, and expertise, but all have a shared passion for our work with under-resourced young people. Visit the Volunteer of the Month gallery to read about past honorees.

Student Writing Gallery One of the most rewarding parts of volunteering with students is taking a peek into their imaginations as they craft short stories, personal essays, poems, newspaper articles, and more. Take a read through the Student Writing Gallery for a glimpse of the projects you’ll be assisting students with.

Tutor/Student Stories We want your stories! To all of our tutors, designers, and other amazing volunteers: we’d love to hear about your experiences working with our students and in support of our mission. Submit your #charactersof826 story (any memorable moments, quotes, or highlights of your volunteer experience, of any length!) to volunteer@826valencia.org.

Tutor Training Opportunities

Each semester we offer a range of trainings for volunteer tutors who are eager to learn the ropes of mentoring students with diverse learning styles and skill sets. Regularly offered trainings include: English Language Learner Support, Encouraging Positive Student Behavior, Writing Coach Strategies, and How to Talk About Race, Gender, and Identity in the Classroom. Please take advantage of our upcoming volunteer tutor trainings by signing up on our calendar. If you can’t attend an in-person training, no sweat! We can provide PowerPoints and handouts by request, and encourage you to talk with 826 Valencia staff about these materials and any challenges you face in the classroom. Don’t see a training or resource you need? Reach out to volunteer@826valencia.org with any ideas.

Volunteer Leadership at 826 Valencia

The 826 Ambassadors The 826 Valencia Volunteer Ambassador Program is designed to increase the satisfaction, participation, and retention of new and current volunteers. As an 826 Volunteer Ambassador, you’ll serve and represent a diverse group of volunteers and will receive support from the Volunteer Manager and other 826 staff, as well as the Volunteer Engagement & Support Team (VEST). If you like connecting with new volunteers, organizing small get-togethers, and representing our programs, then we would love to have you join our efforts! Email vest@826valencia.org for more information and to get started.

VEST stands for the Volunteer Engagement and Support Team, a leadership board comprising volunteers from across our programs and with a wide-range of skill sets. This leadership group provides ongoing guidance and feedback to 826 staff on the volunteer experience, and helps to plan our bi-annual 100 Club volunteer celebration, among other volunteer engagement activities. Individuals on the board are recommended by 826 staff, and each member serves for a minimum of one school-year. Click here to read about our current VEST members.

100 Club We’re party people here at 826 Valencia! But mostly we love to celebrate all the work you do. Every semester we honor the volunteers who have contributed the highest number of hours to our organization (approximately 100 people with the top hours, to tell the truth!) by inviting these special folks to our 100 Club party. Past 100 Clubs have included Trivia Night at the Exploratorium, Cocktails in the Library of Good and Evil, and an old-fashioned square dance at the Peacock Lounge. The 100 Club event is a great way to meet volunteers across programs and an even better way for us to express our gratitude to you. If you’re interested in attending a future 100 Club event and want more information on how to receive this special invite, please ask any 826 Valencia staff member.
