Design Associate

Position Design Associate Reports to Design Director Status Non-Exempt, Part-Time (60% FTE), Hourly Based at Tenderloin Center at 180 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, currently remote with high-speed Internet access needed, but will return to the office when we reopen our centers. Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area, where we have an open-office environment where there may be substantial ambient noise and overheard conversations. POSITION SUMMARY
The Design Associate works closely with the Design team to develop creative solutions and assets across a wide range of projects including publications, identity systems, illustration, newsletters, environmental graphics, store products, posters, flyers, etc. They assist the creative team in amplifying student voices and maintaining the integrity of the 826 brand through strong, imaginative, and adventurous designs that reflect the rich imaginations and diversity of the students we serve.
WHO WE ARE
826 Valencia is an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our innovative model has inspired more than 40 like-minded organizations world-wide. 
REPORTING STRUCTURES
The Design Associate reports to the Design Director and supports the Design Manager and creative volunteers.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design from concept sketches to refined end product 
  • Active participation in design brainstorms & critiques
  • Event branding
  • Identity system design (logos, typography, signage, posters, direct mail)
  • Adhere to 826 brand guidelines, maintain brand integrity
  • Book and magazine design
  • Track projects, meet all deadlines
  • Production of in-house books, signage, posters, etc.
OTHER DUTIES
  • Attend staff meetings, participate in internal committees on diversity, equity and inclusion, the annual 826 National conference, anti-racism trainings, other professional development workshops, and performance appraisal systems
  • Attend 826 Valencia evening functions as needed
  • Work collaboratively with all staff members, across departments
  • All other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and supervisor
REQUIRED EDUCATION SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred)
  • Strong portfolio showing sensitivity and understanding of composition, hierarchy, layout, color, typography, illustration
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Production experience, attention to detail, clean handcraft skills
  • Strong illustration skills
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word programs and Google Suite
  • Knowledge of HTML / CSS / Mailchimp (preferred)
  • Animation (gifs, AfterEffects) (preferred)
  • Photography (portraits & events) (preferred)
