826 Valencia is an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Position Summary
In collaboration with the Programs Director, the Programs Manager oversees programming at three partner elementary schools (Bret Harte, Malcolm X, and Starr King) as well as Magical Adventure Field Trips at the Mission Bay Center. The core of our work is direct service, and this position will lead programming approximately 10-14 hours per week. Our ideal candidate has a proven track record meeting the needs of students of color who live in low-income communities, as well as experience developing and implementing highly-engaging, culturally-responsive, and rigorous writing curriculum. This person absolutely loves front-of-the-room teaching in public elementary school settings, collaborating with teachers, and making sure each child has a transformative and joyful experience with writing. The Programs Manager will support a diverse crew of staff and volunteers to do their jobs well, and helps each team member develop professionally.
Reporting Relationships
The Programs Manager reports to the Mission Bay Programs Director and supervises a Programs Coordinator and two Programs Associates (AmeriCorps members), as well as interns and volunteers. 
Key Responsibilities
Program Planning and Implementation
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, volunteers, interns, and 826 Valencia staff to manage In-School and Field Trip programming
  • Design and/or implement standards-aligned, culturally relevant, project-based writing curriculum in collaboration with classroom teachers and Mission Bay team
  • Develop and implement long-term goals and objectives to achieve the successful outcome of the programs
  • Build relationships with school administration and teachers to plan responsive programming, cultivate strong partnerships, improve alignment, meet student needs, share students’ progress, and identify opportunities for family engagement
  • Correspond effectively and expediently with teachers to schedule Field Trips and plan based on students’ needs; institute effective and timely communication methods; develop supporting curricular resources
  • Develop outreach campaigns to ensure priority schools are accessing program services
  • Oversee the distribution, collection, entry, and analysis of evaluation data for programs; use the data for continuous reflection and reporting
  • Track student and volunteer data using Salesforce and the Contract Management System of the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Families
  • Oversee, directly manage, and support student publishing projects; plan release celebrations to increase student pride and engage families; seek out opportunities to amplify student voices within and beyond the school community
  • Manage components of our summer programs in collaboration with other Programs Managers and Directors
Supervision
  • Supervise and support one Programs Coordinator and two Programs Associates by providing ongoing coaching and feedback, and conducting formal evaluations
    • For Programs Associates, coordinate with the Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium (BAYAC) and the Human Resources Manager, and provide guidance on learning projects.
  • Supervise the activities of interns and volunteers
    • Train, support, and celebrate tutors to promote effectiveness and achieve 2:1 tutor-to-student ratio
    • Support interns’ professional development 
  • Assist with the process of recruiting, interviewing, and selecting well-qualified programs staff
  • Work with the Programs Director to set agendas and/or facilitate regular team meetings to keep everyone informed, identify challenges and best practices, and build community
  • Create conditions for team members to do their best work, and provide morale and practical support informed by the Employee Handbook and other 826 Valencia policies and practices
Other Duties
  • Participate in staff and departmental meetings, internal committees on diversity, equity and inclusion, the annual 826 National conference, anti-racism trainings, other professional development activities, and performance appraisal systems
  • Proactively raise issues with the Programs Director to prioritize tasks and implement solutions
  • Meet all deadlines and support others to maintain accurate timesheets
  • Work collaboratively with all staff members to ensure robust programming  and coordinate best practices across teams, departments, and Centers
  • All other duties assigned by the Executive Director and Programs Director
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least five years teaching and/or youth development experience in under-resourced communities
  • Experience as a supervisor or people manager (preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of the San Francisco Unified School District and Bay Area education issues, including a clear understanding of issues around diversity in public school settings
  • Fully bilingual in Spanish and English languages ( preferred)
  • Able to regularly travel to Bret Harte, Malcolm X, and Starr King Elementary Schools
  • Facility with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Zoom, and macOS
  • Able to complete a background check and tuberculosis screening
    • Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records
  • Able to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination including booster doses when eligible, or participate in an interactive process for accommodations
    • Able to follow COVID-19 health and safety guidelines while in our Writing Centers, at schools sites, and work events

  • Takes dedicated time to coach a diverse set of staff and team members; adjusts coaching style to adapt to different skill levels, working styles, backgrounds, and nuanced definitions of what success looks like
  • Supports in inclusive environment, is proactive in addressing breaches, and works to resolve conflict and foster growth
Benefits
  • $60,000-$70,000 annual salary with $1,000 per year language premium for employees who meet the criteria
