Position Summary

- Greet, engage, and support store and Writing Center customers and visitors
- Maintain and track store inventory, process purchases, and ensure store upkeep
- Participate in 826 Valencia tutoring programs and special events, as needed
Reporting Relationships
Major Responsibilities
- Customer service and outreach: create a welcoming and engaging experience for families we serve, students, volunteers, customers, and donors
- Provide help and knowledge to patrons seeking info about our programs and inventory, or refer individuals to those who can help
- Sell store products and student publications
- Manage register; ring up orders, handle payments and receipts, reconcile end-of-shift report
- Maintain and process store inventory including daily stocking and quarterly counts
- Monitor health of the fish tank in the Pirate Store and immediately report problems to the Stores Director
- Clean and maintain store(s) for maximum sanitation and comfort for customers, students, and staff alike; follow and enforce all COVID-19 protocols
- Report problems with store facilities, equipment, or customer service to Stores Director
- Participate in de-escalation training; ensure safety of patrons and security of our centers, including de-escalating conflicts with the public and following lock-up procedures
- Develop new designs for products and displays
- Represent and support 826 Valencia at community fairs and special events; take photos to share with Communications Team
- Support processing of phone, online, and special orders
- Support space rentals and ensure cleanliness, security, and safety of space before, after, and during events; be a resource to renters and event attendees
- Attend Stores Team meetings and participate in performance appraisal process
- Attend occasional organization-wide professional development seminars and trainings about anti-racism, cultural sensitivity, and on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- Participate in opportunities for specialization and growth in inventory management, design, marketing, and store systems management
- Support programs as needed in order to gain a broad and deep understanding of our work. All non-programs staff are expected to tutor with at least one program per week (approx. 2-4 hours)
- Develop individual work plans with goals and interim milestones to manage work, ensuring high-quality work and timely delivery
- Communicate project progress to manager and seek counsel when help is needed to complete goals
- Understand when and how to escalate issues through appropriate channels
- Communicate authentically and respectfully to resolve conflict, even across lines of difference
- Engage in courageous conversations about the impact of external events on internal priorities and values

- This position will primarily be based out of one of our three Writing Centers, but individuals should be able to work in any of our locations and travel between them and to off-site events throughout the city, as well as participate in virtual meetings
- Stores staff stand to greet customers but have a chair available for other moments
- The role involves moving and unpacking boxes, transporting items between Writing Centers and to events, climbing a 6’+ ladder to access inventory, and related activities (inventory can weigh 20-40lbs)
Education & Experience Requirements
- Experience in retail, customer service and/or visual merchandising
- Basic knowledge of Google Suite
- Conversational Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Tagalog, or other languages (preferred)
- Comfortable interacting with, and supervising youth, ages six to eighteen, within the stores and in an educational capacity when required (preferred)
- Creative experience in Adobe Creative Suite, window display installation, power drill/tools and fix-it skills, product development, or event management (preferred)
- Weekend and holiday availability and flexibility
- Able to complete a background check and Tuberculosis screening. We will consider applicants with arrest and conviction records for employment, pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, but will not hire anyone with a record that includes a conviction of a serious or violent felony, sexual offense, or controlled substance offense
Compensation
- $21.50 hourly wage, with a $0.50/hour language premium for employees who meet the criteria
