Who we are
826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
Position Summary
The Tenderloin Programs Associate will support youth writing programs at our Tenderloin Center through both direct tutoring of students and by supporting the coordination of volunteers and interns, particularly in our Podcasting Field Trips and After-School Writing Workshops programs. This position works with youth of all ages, from 6-18.
Major Responsibilities
- Support all Tenderloin Programs as a tutor and mentor, targeting high-need students for individualized support, communicating with teachers/parents, and tracking students’ growth
- Support volunteers and interns in their role as tutors
- Support the Field Trips Program through a variety of roles, from group facilitation to book production
- Support publications by curating and copy-editing student work
- Track student and volunteer data in Salesforce
- Attend and participate in AmeriCorps Team Days twice a month with regional cohort of youth educators, as well as other AmeriCorps events (i.e. Days of Service) as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Prior work or volunteer experience with group facilitation and youth development

- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Experience working directly with youth
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse population and a variety of stakeholders and audiences
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, flexible, able to work on a variety of projects
- Team-oriented
Preferred Skills and Abilities
- Fluent in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog, and/or Vietnamese
- Audio editing

The Tenderloin Center Programs Associate position is headquartered at 826 Valencia’s Tenderloin Center at 180 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco, CA.

AmeriCorps Service Year Benefits through BAYAC
- $1,430 monthly living stipend, plus an additional $500 monthly stipend from 826 Valencia
- Education Award of $10,000 (comprised of a $6,095 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award and a $3,905 California For All Education Award) granted upon completion of service and usable for college, trade school, or other educational expenses
