HOURS: Full-time position (with evenings and weekends as required)
SALARY: $90,000 to $110,000

826 Valencia is a bustling organization that strives to make sure every dollar raised benefits the young people we serve and that we are in a strong fiscal position to support our long-term sustainability. The Finance Director must accurately and skillfully manage the fine details of accounting, as well as plan and execute a vision for effective financial decision-­making. The Finance Director oversees the finance functions of 826 Valencia, manages all accounting and banking functions for both the nonprofit and retail aspects of the organization, and works closely with the Executive Director and key staff to generate and track budgets both for internal purposes and outside funders.


The Finance Director reports to the Executive Director of 826 Valencia and manages our Bookkeeper.


  • Manage the overall accounting and bookkeeping for the organization, including accounts payable and receivable, inventory and fixed assets, and banking functions
  • Work closely with the Director of Advancement to manage revenue for all development initiatives, including but not limited to: Creating and monitoring grant budgets and grant-­related financial information; processing and tracking all forms of donations in general ledger; tracking use of restricted funds; reconciling development income recorded in Salesforce to contributed income recorded in QuickBooks monthly; budgeting and invoicing for San Francisco government grants
  • Process payroll and 401(k) contributions on a semi-­monthly basis
  • Manage monthly close of books primarily performed by Bookkeeper
  • Maintain our general ledger
  • Manage annual audit and tax engagements
  • Facilitate and prepare the annual budget process
  • Ensure monthly sales tax returns and annual 1099s are filed by Bookkeeper
  • Provide monthly and quarterly financial reporting and analysis to the department heads, Executive Director, and Board of Directors
  • Manage all internal controls; set and monitor all financial policies and procedures
  • Ensure paper and electronic financial files are up-to-date
  • Focus on process improvements, including automation of manual tasks


  • Attend all staff meetings, the annual 826 National Conference, and other professional development opportunities
  • Be a part of the organization’s leadership team in the development and management of the strategic direction for the 826 Valencia organization, and integrate the team’s work to support the organizational vision and mission
  • All other duties as assigned by the Executive Director


  • Bachelor’s degree in business or accounting related field, MA preferred
  • A minimum of five years of experience with arts/education administration and/or nonprofit management, including bookkeeping, financial reporting, payroll, etc. A minimum of two years in a supervisory role in an accounting department required.
  • Experience with fund accounting functions in a non­profit organization



    • Clear knowledge of fiscal policies specific to 501c3 non­profit organizations, including fund accounting
    • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience with QuickBooks Desktop and Microsoft Office, in particular, Microsoft Excel
    • Extensive experience with running payroll, preparing grant reports, preparing and recording cost allocations in accounting software, and preparing organizational and programmatic budgets
    • Strong problem-­solving and analytical skills
    • Punctual, reliable, consistent with strong attention to detail, yet not rigid
    • Seasoned at developing new processes and efficiency improvements
    • Comfortable setting up, managing, and interacting with web­-based systems
    • Designs enduring, scalable, and codified systems that enable staff success and achieve results within department while maximizing resources
    • Ensures day­-to-­day operations within purview are having maximum impact toward organizational strategy; makes sound and culturally-competent decisions that drive the organization forward and marshals the appropriate resources to execute
    • Drives and participates in decisions to refine 826’s values, strategy, and approach based on community context and input; communicates connections and implications of work/decisions across the organization
    • Develops and implements systems to take down silos within and across departments, creating formal/informal structures for cross­-departmental collaboration that leverages differences and inspires trust among members
    • Models expectations for an inclusive environment, where staff, volunteers, stakeholders, and students from all backgrounds thrive
    • Demonstrates highly developed awareness of how one’s leadership and behaviors, directly and indirectly, impact others; anticipates and understands implications
    • Contributes to a culture of professional development, continuous feedback, and mutual support among staff within purview and in collaboration with other directors


      • Knowledge of Zenefits, Salesforce, Expensify, Google Drive, Gmail, Transaction Pro Importer
      • Experience with managing inventory in accounting systems and sales tax returns
      • SF DCYF grant budgeting and invoicing and general financial management
