Hot off the press, another Valencia Bay-farer hits the shelves!
On Wednesday nights in January, the 826 Valencia Writing Lab transformed into a bustling newsroom, as 15 young journalists between the ages of eight and thirteen joined nine tutors to crank out content for the fifty-second issue of our in-house newspaper, the Valencia Bay-Farer. Students battled tight deadlines to bring you their take on what they felt was the month’s most fascinating news—ranging from the recent MLB trades, to economics in Russia, to groundbreaking research in hoverboard design.
On February 4, the journalists, their families, and the volunteers who made the workshop possible came together for a potluck and reading to celebrate the release of the issue. Several students opted to read their articles on stage. One student, who wrote about the artist Keith Haring, wore a Keith Haring sweatshirt for the occasion!
The event concluded with thank yous and appreciations. One student, age 8, bravely raised her hand to say, “this was my first Bay-Farer, and I had a lot of fun and thank you for making it.” Success!
Special thanks goes out to Shannon David and Austin Hoffman, the incredible instructors of the Valencia Bay-Farer, and to all the volunteer tutors who lent their keen editorial eyes.
Thank you also to our talented and dedicated volunteer designer Tim R. who burned the midnight oil to turn around the layout over the course of one week, and to our design department for the in-house production.
