Get involved with new programs in the Tenderloin!

Calling all volunteers!  We need you to bring our 826-style, writing passion, and support to students in the Tenderloin.  Even before we’ve opened the doors of our new center, 826 Valencia is partnering with schools and community-based organizations in the Tenderloin who are committed to empowering student voices in the neighborhood, and we’re seeking your support in a variety of new writing adventures. Help us make a positive impact on local students by volunteering at these projects currently underway in the Tenderloin:

  • Writing Out Loud Workshop:  Help middle school students develop fiction and non-fiction pieces they can share proudly with their school and community.
  • Superhero Tales:  Work with third-graders as they learn the basics of fiction and write action-packed stories about a superhero of their own creation.
  • Homework Help:  Provide encouragement and guidance to fifth-graders on their writing homework.
  • Neighborhood Poetry:  Join this three-week project in January to help students at Bessie Carmichael Elementary School write poetry inspired by their neighborhood.

Head to the volunteer calendar to learn more and sign up! Select “Tenderloin Programs” from the drop-down menu called “program type” to see only the opportunities in our new neighborhood.

You can also help us spread the word!  With our expansion to the Tenderloin, we need many new volunteers to join us at 180 Golden Gate, to support our after-school projects and our new field trip program for middle and high school students. Please tell your friends, loved ones, and any others who have a special affinity for royal puffer fish that we are seeking enthusiastic tutors to join our volunteer crew. In addition to tutoring students, we invite technical-minded volunteers to help us with our new podcasting program. So get everyone you know to sign up to volunteer today!
