New Writers’ Room: Mission High

Our Writers’ Rooms are extensions of our Writing Lab on Valencia Street: satellite classrooms in nearby schools that provide 826’s brand of tutoring and writing support to the entire student population through in-depth teacher partnerships. After a fruitful six years, eight issues of Slick Magazine, and countless other writing projects serving thousands of middle-schoolers, we are sad to announce that, due to classroom space availability and a growing student population, the 2013–14 academic year was the last for the Writers’ Room at James Lick Middle School. But don’t fret! 826 will continue to provide tutoring support for various projects throughout the year at James Lick. We are grateful for the strong working relationship we have enjoyed with the folks at James Lick Middle School, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in the coming years!

But, with the end of an era, a new one begins. We are thrilled to announce our wonderful partners at Mission High School have kindly opened their doors to us and offered to host a brand new Writers’ Room just a few blocks away! After days of painting, moving furniture, and arranging pirate-y curiosities, we are looking forward to unveiling the new space to the Mission community on September 12th.

Looking for a way to support our inaugural year in the new Mission High Writers’ Room? We are grateful for your financial support and we’re in need of a few in-kind donations to make the room extra special: plants; rugs; a comfy armchair; five of these black, wooden IKEA chairs; and nautical/travel-themed knick-knacks for our walls and bookshelves. If you’d like to participate, please send a picture of what you’d like to donate to desta@826valencia.org. Thank you in advance for helping to make our new space a beautiful, welcoming, and inspiring place to write!
