How would you feel if your friend got shot because of the color of their skin? The Hate U Give follows the story of Starr Carter witnessing the fated death of her childhood best friend. This movie is important because it talks about police violence and racism. Angie Thomas’s background history on this book is based off of real-life situations. Angie Thomas said, “The plot was inspired by the real-life police shooting of an unarmed black man.”
There are many ways an author decides to write a book. Angie Thomas decided to write her book from real-life situations. According to, Angie Thomas stated, “I was angry. I was frustrated. I was hurt. So it was actually the frustration and the anger and the pain that led me to write the short story that later became The Hate U Give.” This shows why she decided to write the book.
The Hate U Give wasn’t only inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement but also largely by Tupac. The book title came from Tupac. According to, “Pac said ‘Thug Life’ stood for ‘The Hate U Give Little Infants F—ks Everybody.’ T-H-U-G-L-I-F-E. Meaning what society gives us as youth, bites them back in the a— when they wild out.” When Angie Thomas was deciding on the main character’s name she decided to use Tupac’s inspiration. She knew that Tupac said if he ever had a daughter he would name her Starr.
This book is related to current issues because it talks about police brutality and how people could sometimes misjudge black people. It also talks about code-switching. Angie Thomas stated, “I think, to an extent, for a lot of us African Americans, code-switching is often.” For me, that is true because sometimes you can’t act or talk a type of way around certain people. Angie Thomas also stated, “If I came up here and I was speaking a certain way, you may assume that I’m ignorant just because of that.”
In conclusion, this book is really important and it talks about many things that happen to this day. Also about how some authors write their books.
