Physical health and mental health are the same but very different all at the same time. According to Karen Vaughn, licensed professional counselor, “Some simple steps to reduce risk of physical sickness; eat a well-balanced diet, get plenty of rest, get routine checkups and tests, incorporate regular exercise into your schedule.

These two lists might look and sound the same, but mental tests and exercise can be different from physical tests and exercise. It’s important to work on your physical health and it is easy to do. But, what people don’t realize is working on your mental health is as easy as physical workouts. Some people choose to work on one or the other because it might be too much work to do both.

Vaughn also mentions, “Depression among those with chronic physical illnesses is likely to be missed by professionals who care for physically sick patients,” meaning a lot of doctors don’t pay attention to the mental part of the problem. Physical and mental health go hand in hand. If you only focus more on physical health then your mental health could go down, and if you focus more on your mental health then your physical health could go down.

The text also states that, “For physical problems, most people go to the doctor for a check up. However, most people don’t go to a mental health professional for a mental health exam. In many cases, people only seek out mental health professionals after a crisis has occurred.” Therefore, only a few people think that mental illness is a problem. Most people think that it doesn’t matter and you shouldn’t worry about it as much. Out of every four people with depression, only one goes to see a professional. That is less than 40% of people who get help on their mental health. I think people should go get help. I get it that some people like to believe that they are alone and they have no one to help them get through the hard times, but they aren’t alone and they need to realize it.

In my opinion, both physical and mental health are very important to live a cool and happy life. The average human choses to focus on one and only one, for example my father. My father and mother divorced a couple of days after my little sister’s birth, and we lived with my mom at the beginning. Sooner or later we got taken from our mom and went to live with dad. I had mixed feelings about it because I was happy to see my dad again but sad to leave my mom. This has been affecting my work in many different ways, and I have seen people for it but I haven’t gotten any help yet.

Sports and other things have helped me get through tough times, like basketball and track. My dad has paid no attention to my worries or feelings about it and that also hurts me. So I don’t have time to work on my mental health. I personally have been through a lot, and I think taking care of both my mental and physical health will help me a lot. I think if I could work on my mental health more I could be the best me. That’s why I think working on both mental health and physical health is important, to help you be the best you.
