The Great San Francisco Personal Statement Weekend 2010

On November 13 and 14, more than 180 high-school seniors from throughout the Bay Area attended The Great San Francisco Personal Statement Weekend at Mission High School. Students were matched one-on-one with volunteer tutors to work on their college application and scholarship application essays.

Over 150 volunteers turned their backs on a fair-weathered Dolores Park to assist students in brainstorming, writing, and editing their personal statements. The computer labs were buzzing with creativity and determination as tutors and students focused for hours, many of them leaving at the end of the day with not one, but multiple, completed essays. We were extremely impressed by the dedication of both students and volunteers throughout the weekend and also excited to be of help to high-school seniors during the stressful process of applying to college.

Our work this weekend was also featured in the San Francisco Chronicle.

We also want to thank PopChips, Noe Valley Whole Foods, Bi-Rite Creamery, and Sports Basement — our gracious in-kind donors for this event. We all enjoyed their treats tremendously.
