Get involved with the Young Authors’ Book Project!

January is right around the corner, and with it comes our Young Authors’ Book Project (YABP), one of our most in-depth tutoring experiences! This exciting project is a chance for tutors to form meaningful, one-on-one connections with an amazing group of high school students as they become published authors over the course of five weeks. And for this project to be a success, we need the support of many volunteers.

This year, we’re partnering with Ms. Morrison and Ms. Stangland at Galileo High School. Students in their tenth grade English/Language Arts classes will be grappling with themes from Luis J. Rodriguez’s Always Running. Tutors will be helping students to write, revise, and polish narratives related to belonging, identity, change, and growth. Tutors for this project need to commit to a consistent, twice a week sessions, where they will support the same student every step of the way for the duration of the project. The project runs from January 15 to February 19, and we will be working with two classes. Tutors can sign up to support one or both classes on the following shifts:

  • Tuesdays and Fridays: 9:00 – 10:15 a.m.
  • Tuesdays and Fridays: 2:00 – 3:15 p.m.

The collection will then be edited by a student with the help of a volunteer editorial board, professionally printed, and sold in bookstores nationwide. And as always, the project will culminate with a reading and release party in May, where everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend!

How to Sign Up:

We invite new and returning tutors to participate in this special tutoring opportunity, and you can secure your spot by signing up on our Volunteer Calendar.

All tutors must attend a project-specific training on Friday, January 11. We’ll start with a general orientation for new volunteers from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a YABP specific orientation from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at our Tenderloin Center. We ask all tutors to commit to a regular schedule for all ten sessions of this project (tutoring twice a week for five weeks).

Not yet an 826 volunteer? The Young Authors’ Book Project is a great tutoring experience to start with!
